ANEMIA:Symptoms,Causes and Treatment

INTRODUCTION

Anemia is a widespread condition but it still remains poorly understood and is often overlooked mainly in developing countries where access to healthcare and nutrition is limited.A decrease in red blood cells or the amount of haemoglobin is the main characteristic of this condition, the ability of the body to carry oxygen to the tissues is reduced due to lesser amount of haemoglobin in blood.
It affects millions of people approximately 1.6 billion people  around the world (roughly 25% of the global population) as it is a silent health condition. It is often caused by nutritional deficiencies, chronic diseases, inherited disorder and affects certain group of population like pregnant women, young children and people with chronic diseases.
If it is not treated on time,it may lead to fatigue, weakness,Shortness of breath and increases the risk of complications for pregnant women and can cause heart diseases, diabetes and cancer in patients with chronic disorders.
Most of the people doesn't even know about the causes, symptoms and treatments of anemia , a reason why the diagnosis is delayed and treatment provided remains inadequate.
In this blog,we will discuss the causes, symptoms and treatments for anemia to increase the awareness and education about it,empowering people to take action in preventing and managing the condition of anemia for the improvement and well-being of the individuals.

CAUSES OF ANEMIA

The main causes of Anemia are categorized into three categories:
1.Nutritional Deficiencies
•If the diet of a person lacks iron or his/her body isn't able to absorb iron properly then the person in prone to anemia.
•Vitamin B12 and Folate deficiency can cause anemia.
•If the protein intake in the body is inappropriate then a person is prone to anemia.
2.Chronic Diseases
•A hormone called erythropoietin aids in the production if red blood cells, this hormone is produced by kidneys,if in some case kidney is affected by any disease, hormone production reduces thus reducing RBC count which makes the person anemic.
•Treatments of cancer can cause anemia
•Rheumatoid arthritis includes chronic inflammation which causes anemia.
•Oppurtunistic infections and chronic inflammation due to HIV/AIDS can cause anemia.
3.Inherited disorders
•A genetic disorder named sickle cell anemia involves the abnormal production of red blood cells which causes a significant decrease in haemoglobin production.
•Thalassemia is another one such genetically inherited condition which affects the production of haemoglobin causing anemia.
•The production of the enzyme named glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase is affected due to some genetic reasons leading to anemia.

SYMPTOMS OF ANEMIA

It has wide range of symptoms which have an impact on the daily lifestyle of a person. Some common symptoms are:
1.Physical symptoms
•The person feels tired, sluggish and lack in energy to do daily activities.
•The skin becomes pale, wheatish or yellowish.
•Having a headache frequently or severely.
•Having a feeling of dizziness or Fainting while standing.
2.Emotional and Cognitive symptoms
•The person might become irritable and lacks interest in food or have difficulty in eating.
•The person suffers from anxiety, depression, memory lapses and confusion.
3.Other symptoms
•Hands and feet of a person becomes cold even during warm temperatures.
•The person loses hair excessively.
•Might have an uncomfortable  sensation in legs, often accompanied by the urge to move.
•Wounds and injuries takes time to heal.
•Severe chest pain, angina, cognitive impairment, difficulty in breathing even at resting phase are some of the severe symptoms.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

A combination of physical examination, laboratory tests and medical history are required for the proper diagnosis. Some of them are:
Complete Blood count: The amount if red blood cells, haemoglobin and hematocrit are measured.
Blood Smear:  The shape and size of red blood cells are examined.
Iron Studies: Iron levels, transferrin saturation and ferritin are measured
Vitamin B12 and Folate levels: The essential vitamins are measured in a human body.
Other tests: Kidney function test, liver function test and test for chronic diseases are conducted.
The options for treatments depends on the factor causing anemia.
Iron Supplements  : To treat iron deficiencies, oral or intravenous supplements are given.
Vitamin Supplements :To treat vitamin deficiencies, folate or Vitamin B12 supplements are given.
•Dietary changes : Including iron and vitamin rich foods in the diet can help treating anemia.
•Addressing underlying causes:  Underlying conditions like chronic kidney disease, cancer or HIV are treated.
•Blood transfusions : Giving blood to the person is necessary in some severe conditions.
Erythropoietin-Stimulating Agents: These are the medications that stimulate the production of Red blood cells.
Surgery: Underlying issues like ulcers and tumors causing anemia are need to be proved by surgical procedures in some cases.

COMPLICATIONS AND PREVENTION
If a proper concern is not shown towards this condition,it can lead to various complications like:
Heart Problems: The workload on the geart increases as their isn't enough oxygen supply in blood due to anemia which can cause heart failure, arrhythmia and other complications of heart.
•Pregnancy Complications : Preterm labor, low birth weight and maternal mortality are some of the complications which can occur due to anemia.
•Impaired Cognitive Function: Memory loss and concentration decreases due to anemia.
Weakened Immune System : An individual can become more prone to infections due to weakness in immune system by anemia.
•Poor Wound Healing:  The recovery time for the wound increases as the healing properties of blood is decreased due to anemia.
HOWEVER,Preventing and starting the treatment as early as possible is necessary for avoiding such complications. Some methods are:
•Having a balanced diet is very necessary.
•Iron Supplements for pregnant women and for women with heavy menstrual bleeding are very essential.
•B12 and Folate supplements also helps in treating this deficiency
•Getting check ups done on a regular basis will help in the detection of anemia at an early stage and complications could be prevented
•To enhance the absorption of iron one should reduce the intake of caffeine.
•Managing the chronic diseases like HIV/AIDS,kidney disease,  diabetes effectively will help in preventing the complications due to anemia.

CONCLUSION

Anemia is a widespread and complex health condition which affects millions of people worldwide. It has significant consequences on person's quality of life, productivity, and overall health. By understanding the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options for anemia we can find ways for its effective management and prevention. By acquiring a balanced diet, managing chronic diseases, and seeking regular health check-ups, one can reduce their risk of developing anemia and the complications associated with it. Early detection and treatment will result in significant improved health outcomes, making it vital to prioritize anemia awareness and education.

The Magic of Chemiluminescence

INTRODUCTION  While thinking about light, the human mind jumps to a conclusion that sources like Sun,glowing bulbs or even a campfire, basically which involves the presence of heat to glow that is burning fuels, heated filaments or nuclear fusion. But what if we say that nature and chemistry have their own unique way of making light without heat? For that, let's look into the fascinating world of chemiluminescence, where chemical reactions create radiant light on their own by turning invisible molecular changes into visible beauty. Sup WHAT IS CHEMILUMINESCENCE? The emission of light as a direct product of a chemical reaction is known as chemiluminescence. It is not like a flame or incandescent bulb which glows because of heat ,however this process entirely skips the heating part. The working of this process can be simplified as follows: ●First Step:   The chemical reaction occurs which produces a high-energy intermediate that is an unstable molecule. ●Second Step: ...

The Chemistry of Smell

INTRODUCTION  One of the most powerful and intimate senses that human beings possess is Smell. While passing through the bakery,a whiff of freshly baked bß4read can take us back to our childhood, the rain droplets on the dry soil give rise to an aroma that can spark a feeling of nostalgia and the memories of loved ones are triggered by just a hint of perfume. Despite its importance, it often receives less attention than vision and hearing. Along with the visionary and hearing ability, smelling things also play an important role in experiencing the world around us. Such sensations holds a fascinating interplay of chemistry and biology: tiny volatile molecules, specialized receptors in our noses and intricate neural pathways in the brain. Sup In this blog post, we will explore the chemistry of smell by gaining an insight —what odors are made of,how our Olfactory system detects them, the science of fragrance design and why smells are considered important for health, memor...

ZOMBIE ANTS

INTRODUCTION  On hearing the word zombies, our mind immediately flashes the images of horror films and science fictions where reanimated bodies are shown wandering mindlessly under some wrong influence. But if we talk about the natural world, the process of zombification is not just fictional rather it is a real phenomenon. Most of the parasitic species have evolved the ability to manipulate the behavior of their host which forces them to act in ways which benefit the life cycle of a parasite. Sup In this blog post,we will expose the process of zombification, by quoting an example of a fungus named  Ophiocordyceps   unilateralis   which is often nicknamed as the "zombie-ant fungus". It is found in most of the tropical forests and it has developed an extraordinary ability to hijack an ant's body thus turning it into a vehicle for fungal reproduction. This phenomenon basically unfolds the parts of biology, horror story and an evolution.  THE LIFE CYCLE...
