Unveiling the Diseases affecting BRAIN

 INTRODUCTION

The Human Brain is a very delicate and complex organ as it consists of 100 billion neurons with the ability to form connections with other thousands of neurons which control every aspect of our life from movement and sensation to emotion and cognition.
It is a very fragile organ as well, as diseases and disorders of brain can affect anyone without any consideration of age, background or lifestyle.People have symptoms like memory loss, cognitive decline, seizures and even paralysis due to the conditions affecting brain which in turn affects the quality of life of an individual.
Approximately one billion people across the world suffer from neurological disorders like Alzheimer's disease,Parkinson's disease, stroke and multiple sclerosis as per the estimation of WHO (World Health Organization),they not only affect an individual ,families, communities and society also faces its consequences as productivity of a person decreases and he/she becomes an economic burden thus reducing the quality of life.
In this blog,we will look into different brain diseases, their causes,  symptoms, diagnosis and treatments as well as strategies for prevention and awareness ,thus empowering the population to take control over brain health and work for a healthier and happy future.

TYPES OF BRAIN DISEASES

These diseases can be categorized into various types depending on their causes, symptoms and effects on the brain
Neurodegenerative diseases
▪︎Alzheimer's disease:Memory thinking and behavior of a person are affected progressively.
▪︎Parkinson's disease:Movement, balance and coordination are affected of a person.
▪︎Huntington's disease:A progressive damage occurs in brain and it is a rare, inherited disorder.
☆Neuroinflammatory diseases
▪︎Multiple sclerosis:Central nervous system is affected due to which muscles weaken, vision loss and a person faces coordination issues.
▪︎ Encephalitis:The inflammation of brain happens and it is a rare disease.
▪︎Meningitis:The membranes around the brain and spinal cord suffers from inflammation due to bacterial or viral infection.
Neurovascular diseases
▪︎Stroke:The blood supply to the brain is reduced or paused which causes damage to the tissues of brain.
▪︎Cerebral vasculitis:The blood vessels of the brain suffers from inflammation and it is a rare condition.
▪︎Moyamoya disease:The blood vessels of the brain becomes narrow and the flow of blood is reduced and it is also a rare condition.
Neurodevelopmental disorders
▪︎ Autism spectrum disorder:Communication, behavior and social interaction of a person are affected.
▪︎Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD):Attention, impulse control and hyperactivity are affected.
▪︎ Learning disabilities:The ability to learn and process information are affected.
Other Brain Diseases
▪︎Brain Tumors:The tissues of the brain grow abnormally and it can benign or malignant.
▪︎Epilepsy:Some factors like genetic, head trauma or infection causes seizures in an individual.
▪︎Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy(CET):It is a degenerative brain disease which is caused by repeated blows to the head and it often affects athletes in contact sports.

CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS
By understanding the causes and risk facots causing brain diseases we can take preventive measures and help protect people from them.
Genetic Factors
Family History:If a family has a history of a particular condition then the risk of development of a disease increases
Genetic Mutations:The alterations in gene like in case of Huntington's disease also increases the risk.

Environmental factors
Head Trauma:Having a head injury during a car accident or fall increases the risk of developing a disease.
Toxins:Pesticides and heavy metals are the toxins, if exposed to these the risk of developing a brain disease is increased.
Infections:Bacterial and viral infections as in case of meningitis and Encephalitis can also cause the brain diseases.
Lifestyle factors
Diet:If a diet is rich in processed food, sugar and saturated fats then the risk of developing the Alzheimer's disease is high.
Sleep:Not getting enough amount of sleep is also considered as an increasing warning for development of brain diseases.
Stress:If someone suffers from chronic stress, then the conditions like anxiety and depression creeps in.
☆Other risk factors
Age:Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease generally occurs with increasing age.
Sex:Multiple sclerosis generally occur in women while Parkinson's disease mostly affects men.
•Medical Conditions:Diabetes and high blood pressure also increases the risk of developing brain diseases.

SYMPTOMS AND DIAGNOSIS
☆If a person develops a brain disease then some common symptoms are as follows:
• Loss of Memory and cognitive decline.
•Faces difficulty in daily activities like speech, language, and communication
•A feeling of weakness, numbness, or paralysis in the face, arm, or leg.
•Vision changes, including blurred vision, double vision, or loss of vision.
•Seizures, tremors, or muscle spasms.
• Mood changes, including depression, anxiety, or personality changes.
☆Diagnosis is very important so that the patient receives effective treatment which can be done by a qualified healthcare professional for determining the underlying cause of symptoms. Some of the essential diagnostic tests are:
•Neurological examination
•Imaging tests (CT, MRI, PET)
•Blood tests
•Lumbar puncture (spinal tap)
•Electroencephalogram (EEG)
•Genetic testing

 TREATMENT AND MANAGEMENT OPTIONS
Medications:
• Cholinesterase inhibitors for Alzheimer's disease
• Dopamine agonists for Parkinson's disease
• Anticonvulsants for seizures
• Antidepressants for depression and anxiety
Therapies:
• Physical therapy for mobility and balance
•Occupational therapy for daily living skills
•Speech therapy for communication
• Cognitive therapy for cognitive decline
Surgical Options:
•Brain tumor removal
• Deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease
•Shunt placement for hydrocephalus.
Lifestyle Changes:
•Healthy diet and exercise
•Stress management
•Sleep hygiene
• Social support and counseling
A proper treatment plan includes a combination of these options which are made according to the specific needs and diagnosis of an individual.

 PREVENTION AND AWARENESS

Strategies for prevention of Brain diseases:
• Healthy lifestyle habits (exercise, balanced diet, adequate sleep)
•Stress management techniques (meditation, yoga, deep breathing)
•Regular health check-ups and screenings
•Avoiding head injuries and toxins
•Getting vaccinated against infectious diseases
Awareness and Education:
•Learning about brain diseases and their risk factors
• Recognizing early warning signs and symptoms
• Reducing stigma around brain diseases
•Supporting research and advocacy efforts
•Encouraging others to prioritize brain health
By taking proactive steps to prevent brain diseases and promoting awareness and education, we can reduce the risk of developing these conditions and improve overall brain health.

The Magic of Chemiluminescence

INTRODUCTION  While thinking about light, the human mind jumps to a conclusion that sources like Sun,glowing bulbs or even a campfire, basically which involves the presence of heat to glow that is burning fuels, heated filaments or nuclear fusion. But what if we say that nature and chemistry have their own unique way of making light without heat? For that, let's look into the fascinating world of chemiluminescence, where chemical reactions create radiant light on their own by turning invisible molecular changes into visible beauty. Sup WHAT IS CHEMILUMINESCENCE? The emission of light as a direct product of a chemical reaction is known as chemiluminescence. It is not like a flame or incandescent bulb which glows because of heat ,however this process entirely skips the heating part. The working of this process can be simplified as follows: ●First Step:   The chemical reaction occurs which produces a high-energy intermediate that is an unstable molecule. ●Second Step: ...

The Chemistry of Smell

INTRODUCTION  One of the most powerful and intimate senses that human beings possess is Smell. While passing through the bakery,a whiff of freshly baked bß4read can take us back to our childhood, the rain droplets on the dry soil give rise to an aroma that can spark a feeling of nostalgia and the memories of loved ones are triggered by just a hint of perfume. Despite its importance, it often receives less attention than vision and hearing. Along with the visionary and hearing ability, smelling things also play an important role in experiencing the world around us. Such sensations holds a fascinating interplay of chemistry and biology: tiny volatile molecules, specialized receptors in our noses and intricate neural pathways in the brain. Sup In this blog post, we will explore the chemistry of smell by gaining an insight —what odors are made of,how our Olfactory system detects them, the science of fragrance design and why smells are considered important for health, memor...

ZOMBIE ANTS

INTRODUCTION  On hearing the word zombies, our mind immediately flashes the images of horror films and science fictions where reanimated bodies are shown wandering mindlessly under some wrong influence. But if we talk about the natural world, the process of zombification is not just fictional rather it is a real phenomenon. Most of the parasitic species have evolved the ability to manipulate the behavior of their host which forces them to act in ways which benefit the life cycle of a parasite. Sup In this blog post,we will expose the process of zombification, by quoting an example of a fungus named  Ophiocordyceps   unilateralis   which is often nicknamed as the "zombie-ant fungus". It is found in most of the tropical forests and it has developed an extraordinary ability to hijack an ant's body thus turning it into a vehicle for fungal reproduction. This phenomenon basically unfolds the parts of biology, horror story and an evolution.  THE LIFE CYCLE...
