Unveiling the diseases affecting LUNGS

INTRODUCTION

The human respiratory system constitutes a crucial organ called lungs as they are responsible for bringing oxygen into the body and remove the carbon dioxide. As every organ has their own characteristics, lungs are considered to be very delicate and can be affected by various diseases and conditions thus impacting one's life in a negative way as in facing a difficulty in breathing, walking and even a person is not able to sleep properly.
According to the estimation of World Health Organization(WHO), diseases of lungs are responsible for millions of death every year hence lung health should be considered as a very important topic as many people are still unaware of the risks and consequences of lung diseases.
The lack of awareness leads to delayed diagnosis and treatment which ultimately results in poor health and reduced quality of life.
In this blog,we will look into the different types of lung diseases, their causes, symptoms, treatment plans and how to prevent them so that we will be able to take proactive steps at the earliest stage and protect our lung health thus increasing the quality of life.

TYPES OF LUNG DISEASES
The lung diseases can be categorized into different types depending on their symptoms, causes and treatment options.
Some of the common lung diseases are:
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
(COPD)
A long term exposure to the irritants of lungs like smoke from the cigarette makes it difficult to breathe thus making it a progressive lung disorder.
☆Asthmatic
A type of chronic inflammatory disorder which includes repeated intervals of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath.
☆Pneumonia
The infection which causes the inflammation of air sacs in the lungs, caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi.
☆Lung Cancer
On being exposed to smoking and carcinogenic material,a type of cancer(uncontrolled growth of cells) originates in the lungs.
☆Pulmonary Embolism
A blood clot which travels from legs to lungs causes the artery of lungs to get blocked thus reducing the blood flow to the lungs.
☆Cystic Fibrosis
It is a genetic disorder which causes severe damage to the lungs and digestive system in which the thick, sticky mucous clogs the pathways for air.
☆Tuberculosis (TB)
It is a bacterial infection which primarily affects the lungs but it can also affect other parts of the body.
☆Broncheictasis
In this condition, the pathways for air are scarred and damaged which leads to the production of mucus and chronic coughing.
☆Interstitial Lung Disease
It is a group of lung diseases which causes inflammation and scarring of lung tissue and the person is not able to breathe.
☆Pulmonary Hypertension
The blood pressure in the arteries of lungs becomes so high that can lead to the failure of heart in this condition.

CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS
Diseases of the lungs are complex conditions which can arise from various factors like genetic, environmental or lifestyle of a person. Some common causes and risk factors are:
☆Genetic Factors
•The individuals probability of developing a lung disease increases if someone from the family already has or had  a lung disease.
•Genetic Mutations like one that affects the CFTR gene, increase the risk of lung diseases.
☆Environmental factors
•If an individual is exposed to poor air quality which includes particulate matter, ozone or nitrogen dioxide then there's a increased risk of developing a lung disease.
•If a person is exposed to the smoke of other people's cigarettes, cigars or pipes.
•If a person is exposed to the natural radioactive gas known as radon gas which generally accumulates in the buildings.
☆Lifestyle factors
•The people smoking cigarettes, cigars or pipes often have higher rate of developing a lung disease.
•A sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of developing a lung disease.
•If the diet of a person is high in sugar, processed foods and unhealthy fats then the risk is high.
☆Medical conditions
•Asthma increase the risk of developing other lung diseases.
•COPD Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease also increases the risk of developing other lung diseases.
•Pneumonia also increases the development of other lung disease.
☆Occupational hazards
•If an individual is exposed to asbestos fibres then the risk of developing a lung disease increases.
•Exposure to silica dust increases the risk of developing a lung disease.
•Exposure to certain metals and chemicals can lead to developing a heart disease.

SYMPTOMS AND DIAGNOSIS
Symptoms of the lung diseases vary depending on the specific conditions.
Some of the common symptoms are:
☆Shortness of Breath:Difficulty in breathing even when relaxed.
☆Coughing:Mucus or phlegm producing cough which may be persistent or recurring.
☆Chest pain or tightness:A feeling of tightness, pressure or pain in the chest area.
☆Weight loss:Weight of the person loses unintentionally.
☆Wheezing:It is a type of high pitched whistling sound when breathing out.
☆Fatigue:Lacking in energy,feeling tired.
☆Coughing up Blood:Coughing Blood or rust-colored mucous.
Some of the Diagnostic Methods are as follows:
☆Chest X-Ray:A radiographic image of the chest to visualize the lungs and surrounding tissues.
☆Computed tomography: A non-invasive imaging test that uses X-rays and computer technology to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the lungs.
☆Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI): A non-invasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the lungs.
☆Pulmonary Function Test (PFTs):A group of tests that measure lung function, including spirometry and lung volume measurements.
☆Bronchoscopy:A minimally invasive procedure that uses a flexible tube with a camera and light on the end to visualize the airways and lungs.
☆Biopsy: A procedure that involves removing a small sample of lung tissue for examination under a microscope.
☆Blood tests:Blood tests to check for infection, inflammation, or other conditions that may be affecting the lungs.

TREATMENT AND MANAGEMENT OPTIONS
Options for treating and managing lung diseases vary based on the particular condition, its severity, and individual requirements. Popular choices consist of:
☆Drugs (bronchodilators, steroids, antibiotics)
☆Therapy with oxygen
☆Lung rehabilitation
☆Surgical procedures (lung transplantation, excision of tumors)
☆Modifications in lifestyle (cessation of smoking, physical activity, nutritious eating)
☆Complementary treatments (acupuncture, yoga, breathing techniques)
A healthcare professional will collaborate with the person to create a tailored treatment strategy aimed at managing symptoms, slowing disease progression, and enhancing quality of life.

PREVENTION AND AWARENESS
Avoiding lung diseases involves:
☆Stopping smoking and steering clear of secondhand smoke
☆Steering clear of air contamination and ecological pollutants
☆Receiving vaccinations for flu and pneumonia
☆Maintaining proper cleanliness and respiratory manners
☆Upkeeping a nutritious lifestyle (physical activity, well-rounded nutrition)
Increasing awareness of lung diseases can assist:
☆Inform people about risk factors and methods for prevention.
☆Encourage prompt identification and care.
☆Assist in the research and creation of novel therapies
☆Enhance lung function and general wellness.

The Magic of Chemiluminescence

INTRODUCTION  While thinking about light, the human mind jumps to a conclusion that sources like Sun,glowing bulbs or even a campfire, basically which involves the presence of heat to glow that is burning fuels, heated filaments or nuclear fusion. But what if we say that nature and chemistry have their own unique way of making light without heat? For that, let's look into the fascinating world of chemiluminescence, where chemical reactions create radiant light on their own by turning invisible molecular changes into visible beauty. Sup WHAT IS CHEMILUMINESCENCE? The emission of light as a direct product of a chemical reaction is known as chemiluminescence. It is not like a flame or incandescent bulb which glows because of heat ,however this process entirely skips the heating part. The working of this process can be simplified as follows: ●First Step:   The chemical reaction occurs which produces a high-energy intermediate that is an unstable molecule. ●Second Step: ...

The Chemistry of Smell

INTRODUCTION  One of the most powerful and intimate senses that human beings possess is Smell. While passing through the bakery,a whiff of freshly baked bß4read can take us back to our childhood, the rain droplets on the dry soil give rise to an aroma that can spark a feeling of nostalgia and the memories of loved ones are triggered by just a hint of perfume. Despite its importance, it often receives less attention than vision and hearing. Along with the visionary and hearing ability, smelling things also play an important role in experiencing the world around us. Such sensations holds a fascinating interplay of chemistry and biology: tiny volatile molecules, specialized receptors in our noses and intricate neural pathways in the brain. Sup In this blog post, we will explore the chemistry of smell by gaining an insight —what odors are made of,how our Olfactory system detects them, the science of fragrance design and why smells are considered important for health, memor...

ZOMBIE ANTS

INTRODUCTION  On hearing the word zombies, our mind immediately flashes the images of horror films and science fictions where reanimated bodies are shown wandering mindlessly under some wrong influence. But if we talk about the natural world, the process of zombification is not just fictional rather it is a real phenomenon. Most of the parasitic species have evolved the ability to manipulate the behavior of their host which forces them to act in ways which benefit the life cycle of a parasite. Sup In this blog post,we will expose the process of zombification, by quoting an example of a fungus named  Ophiocordyceps   unilateralis   which is often nicknamed as the "zombie-ant fungus". It is found in most of the tropical forests and it has developed an extraordinary ability to hijack an ant's body thus turning it into a vehicle for fungal reproduction. This phenomenon basically unfolds the parts of biology, horror story and an evolution.  THE LIFE CYCLE...
