The Harmonious Bond b/w Human beings and Nature

INTRODUCTION

A German biologist Heinrich Anton de Bary in 1879 coined the term symbiosis which means the close and often long-term relationships between different biological species. These relationships can take many forms such as:
●Mutualistic Associations: In this association, both the biological species gain benefit from the symbiotic relationship.
●Commensalism Associations:  In this association, one specie is gains the benefit and the other remains unaffected.
●Parasitism : In this association,one specie gains benefit at the expense of the other one.
Symbiosis is a powerful framework in understanding the complex and multifaceted ways in which human beings interact with the natural world. It is important for us to realize that our actions have consequences not only on us but foe the entire web of life which surrounds us. Hence it is crucial on our part to appreciate the intricate role of ecosystems and preserve the biodiversity.

Pollination: The insects gain benefit from the nectar and pollen provided by plants and in return they help in the fertilization of crops for human beings.
Formation of soil: Human beings depends on microorganisms and earthworms for the formation of soil as they breakdown organic matter and rocks, in return they gain benefit from the food and shelter provided by the soil.
Regulation of Climate: Human beings depends on forests and oceans for the regulation of climate and these ecosystems in return gain benefit from carbon dioxide and other nutrients produced by human beings.



COMMENSALISTIC RELATIONSHIPS 

The commensalistic relationships are also very common between human beings and nature where one specie gains benefit and other remains unaffected. Some examples are as follows :
Shelter: Human beings depends on trees and other vegetation for shelter and protection from elements,whereas on the other trees aren't directly affected by the presence of human beings.
 Food: Human beings depends on crops and livestock for food,while these organisms are not directly affected by human beings.
Medicine: Human beings depends on plants and microorganisms for the medicine while these species are not affected by the presence of human beings.


PARASITIC RELATIONSHIPS 

It is quite unfortunate that parasitic relationships also exist between human beings and nature where one specie gains benefit at the expense of the other. Some examples are as follows:
Deforestation: Human beings gains benefit from the timber and land provided by cutting down forests,however it comes at the expense of environment and human health.
Pollution: Human beings benefit from the convenience and economic benefits of pollution and this comes at the expense of environment and human health.
Overfishing: Human beings benefit from the food provided by fishing but this comes at the expense of the marine ecosystems and the organisms that depend on it.


RESTORING BALANCE 

It is quite clear and evident that actions of human beings have a profound impact on the natural world. The consequences of human activity from deforestation to pollution,have disturbed the delicate balance of ecosystems which threatens the foundation of life on earth. Thus, restoring balance is not just moral value,but an essential necessity.
