Chemistry of Water

INTRODUCTION

Out of many essential substances on the planet earth one of the most important one is Water as it has unique chemical properties which have the ability to support life on Earth.
In this blog post,we will explore  the unique properties of water,it's structure and its importance in various biological and chemical processes.

The Structure of Water

A water is a simple molecule which is composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom thus making the chemical formula H2O. To determine the unique properties and behavior of water it is essential to understand the structure of water.
Molecular Structure
The molecule of water has a bent or V-shape structure with an oxygen atom at the center and the two hydrogen atoms on either side. Covalent Bonding is present between oxygen and hydrogen atoms which are considered very strong chemical bonds that are involved in the sharing of electrons.
Bond Angle and Length
The hydrogen atoms in a water molecule are at a bond angle of approximately 104.5 degrees, which is slightly less than the tetrahedral angle of 109.5 degrees. Oxygen and hydrogen atoms have a bond length of approximately 95.8 picometers.

Polarity
It is a polar molecule which means it has slightly positive charge on one end that is hydrogen atoms and slightly negative charge on the other end that is oxygen atom. This Polarity arises because of the difference in electronegativity between oxygen and hydrogen atoms.

Electronegativity
Oxygen being highly electronegative element has a tendency to attract electrons towards itself. On the other hand, hydrogen atoms have low electronegativity.  As a result, the oxygen atom in a water molecule pulls the shared electrons closer to itslef which creates a partial negative charge.

Hydrogen Bonding
The presence of Polarity in the water molecules allows them to form hydrogen bonds with each other which have weak electrostatic attractions. The hydrogen bonds play an important role in determining the unique properties of water like its high boiling point and surface tension.

●Unique Properties of Water

Water is considered as a unique substance with many distinct proper which makes it essential for life. It is important to understand these properties so that we can appreciate its important roles in several biological, chemical and environmental processes.
High Specific Heat Capacity
It has a high specific heat capacity which means it can absorb and release large amount of heat energy without any noticeable change in the temperature. This property of water helps in regulating the climate of earth and weather patterns.
●High Surface tension
It has a high surface tension which allows it to resist external forces and maintain its shape. This property is important for many biological processes such as the formation of cell membrane.

Universal Solvent
It is considered as an excellent solvent as it has the ability to dissolve widr variety of substances.  This property makes it important for many chemical reactions and biological processes.
Density Anomaly
Water expands when it freezes, thus making ice less dense than the liquid water. This property is essential for many environmental processes like the formation of sea ice and the survival of aquatic life.

Cohesion and Adhesion
Having a high cohesion and adhesion means water can stick to itself and other substances. This property is required for many biological processes  which includes transport of water in plants.
●Importance of Water in Biological Processes
It plays an important role in different biological processes which are as follows:
Cellular functions:  It is essential for cellular functions like metabolism, transportation of nutrients and waste and maintains the shape of the cells.
Photosynthesis: It is a reactant in photosynthesis, which is the process by which plants produce energy from sunlight.
Temperature Regulation: It helps in regulation of the temperature in living organisms both through its high specific heat capacity and its role in sweating and evaporation.

●Importance of Water in Chemical Processes
Water also plays an important role in different chemical processes which are as follows:
Solvent Properties: It's solvent properties make it very useful medium for different chemical reactions.
Hydrolysis Reactions: It is involved in hydrolysis reactions which are chemical reactions that involve the breaking of chemical bonds using water.
Industrial Applications: It is used in many industries for cooling systems, cleaning and manufacturing processes.

●Water's role in Environmental Processes

It plays an important role in maintaining various environmental processes which are as follows:
Water Cycle: Water is constantly cycled through the environment with water evaporating from the oceans, condensing into clouds and precipitating back to earth.
Weathring and Erosion: It plays an important role in weathring and erosion, shaping the Earth's surface through its flow and chemical reactions.
Aquatic Ecosystem: Water is very essential for aquatic ecosystem as it supports the different variety of plant and animal life.

The Magic of Chemiluminescence

INTRODUCTION  While thinking about light, the human mind jumps to a conclusion that sources like Sun,glowing bulbs or even a campfire, basically which involves the presence of heat to glow that is burning fuels, heated filaments or nuclear fusion. But what if we say that nature and chemistry have their own unique way of making light without heat? For that, let's look into the fascinating world of chemiluminescence, where chemical reactions create radiant light on their own by turning invisible molecular changes into visible beauty. Sup WHAT IS CHEMILUMINESCENCE? The emission of light as a direct product of a chemical reaction is known as chemiluminescence. It is not like a flame or incandescent bulb which glows because of heat ,however this process entirely skips the heating part. The working of this process can be simplified as follows: ●First Step:   The chemical reaction occurs which produces a high-energy intermediate that is an unstable molecule. ●Second Step: ...

The Chemistry of Smell

INTRODUCTION  One of the most powerful and intimate senses that human beings possess is Smell. While passing through the bakery,a whiff of freshly baked bß4read can take us back to our childhood, the rain droplets on the dry soil give rise to an aroma that can spark a feeling of nostalgia and the memories of loved ones are triggered by just a hint of perfume. Despite its importance, it often receives less attention than vision and hearing. Along with the visionary and hearing ability, smelling things also play an important role in experiencing the world around us. Such sensations holds a fascinating interplay of chemistry and biology: tiny volatile molecules, specialized receptors in our noses and intricate neural pathways in the brain. Sup In this blog post, we will explore the chemistry of smell by gaining an insight —what odors are made of,how our Olfactory system detects them, the science of fragrance design and why smells are considered important for health, memor...

ZOMBIE ANTS

INTRODUCTION  On hearing the word zombies, our mind immediately flashes the images of horror films and science fictions where reanimated bodies are shown wandering mindlessly under some wrong influence. But if we talk about the natural world, the process of zombification is not just fictional rather it is a real phenomenon. Most of the parasitic species have evolved the ability to manipulate the behavior of their host which forces them to act in ways which benefit the life cycle of a parasite. Sup In this blog post,we will expose the process of zombification, by quoting an example of a fungus named  Ophiocordyceps   unilateralis   which is often nicknamed as the "zombie-ant fungus". It is found in most of the tropical forests and it has developed an extraordinary ability to hijack an ant's body thus turning it into a vehicle for fungal reproduction. This phenomenon basically unfolds the parts of biology, horror story and an evolution.  THE LIFE CYCLE...
