Mosquito Borne Diseases

INTRODUCTION

The diseases which are of significant public health concern across the world are categorized as mosquito-borne diseases. Such type of diseases are caused by the bite of an infected mosquito and can cause wide range of symptoms from mild to severe.
In this blog post, we will explore the different types of mosquito borne diseases, their symptoms and prevention strategies.

Types of Mosquito-borne diseases
●MALARIA
The parasite causing this disease is known as plasmodium and the vector for malaria are the mosquitos. In tropical and subtropical regions of the world it is a significant public health concern.
Causes and Transmission
It is transmitted by the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. The parasite gets injected into the blood stream where it multiplies and causes illness.
Symptoms
The symptoms of malaria are as follows:
-Fever:Suffering from high fever is a very common symptom of malaria.
-Chills: The two characteristic symptoms are chills and sweating.
-Flu like symptoms: It can cause flu-like symptoms like headache, muscle pain and fatigue.
Prevention and Treatment
It is essential to prevent malaria through the following steps:
-Mosquito Control:It is important to eliminate the mosquito breeding sites by using insecticides.
-Personal Protection: One should use mosquito nets, wear protective clothing and apply insect repellents.
-Vaccination: One should get vaccinated for malaria as many vaccination options are available.
Treatment for malaria involves antimalarial medications which can cure the disease if started promptly.
●DENGUE
It is a viral disease which is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes mosquito. In many parts of the world, mainly tropical and subtropical regions it is of great public health concern.
Causes and Transmission
This disease is caused by four different serotypes of the dengue virus(DENV-1,DENV-2,DENV-3 and DENV-4.) This virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected aedes mosquito.
Symptoms
Following are the symptoms of dengue:
-High Fever:The most common symptom is the sudden onset of high fever.
-Severe Headache: It can cause severe headache and pain behind the eyes.
-Joint and muscle pain: One of the characteristic symptom is severe joint and muscle pain.
-Rash: Some people develop rash or lesions on the skin.
•Prevention and Treatment
To prevent dengue, one must follow the steps listed:
-Mosquito Control: It is essential to eliminate the mosquito breeding sites by using insecticides.
-Personal Protection: One must use mosquito nets, wear protective clothing and apply insect repellents.
There is no such specific treatmennsmit for dengue, but early detection and proper medical care can reduce the complications and risk of death.
●ZIKA
It is a viral disease which is transmitted by the bite of an infected aedes mosquito. It can be transmitted through sexual contact, from mother to child during pregnancy, or through blood transfusions.
Causes and Transmission
It is transmitted mainly by aedes mosquitos which are mainly active during the day. This virus can cause severe birth defects, such as microcephaly(It is a condition where baby's head is smaller than expected) and other neurological complications.
Symptoms
Most of the people infected with zika virus do not develop symptoms. However, some symptoms which occur are as follows:
-Mild fever
-Skin rashes
-Conjunctivitis (red eyes)
-Muscle or Joint pain
Headache
Prevention
One must follow the listed steps to prevent zika disease:
-Mosquito Control : It is important to eliminate the mosquito breeding sites by using insecticides.
-Personal Protection : One should use mosquito nets, wear protective clothing and apply insect repellents.
-Safe sex practices : One must use condoms to prevent sexual Transmission.
●YELLOW FEVER
It is a viral disease which is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. In the parts of Africa and South America it is a significant public health concern as many people get affected by this disease.
Causes and Transmission
It is caused by the yellow fever virus which is transmitted through the bite of an infected aedes mosquito. This virus can cause range of symptoms, from mild to severe.
Symptoms
Following are the symptoms of this disease:
-Fever: High fever is one of the common symptom of this disease.
-Chills: Chills and sweating are also the common symptoms.
-Headache: Severe headache is also a common symptom.
-Muscle Pain : Joint pain and muscular pain are also common in this disease.
-Nausea andVomiting : Some people also experience nausea and vomiting.
●Prevention
One should follow the steps listed below for preventing the disease:
-Vaccination: One should get vaccinated for the disease as many vaccines have been developed.
-Mosquito Control : It is important to eliminate the mosquito breeding sites by using insecticides.
-Personal Protection : One should use mosquito nets, wear protective clothing and apply insect repellents.
CONCLUSION

To sum up, diseases transmitted by mosquitoes like malaria, dengue, Zika, and yellow fever present major public health issues globally. These conditions can lead to serious illness, chronic health issues, and possibly death. Comprehending the origins, indicators, and prevention methods is essential for lessening the impact of these illnesses.

The Magic of Chemiluminescence

INTRODUCTION  While thinking about light, the human mind jumps to a conclusion that sources like Sun,glowing bulbs or even a campfire, basically which involves the presence of heat to glow that is burning fuels, heated filaments or nuclear fusion. But what if we say that nature and chemistry have their own unique way of making light without heat? For that, let's look into the fascinating world of chemiluminescence, where chemical reactions create radiant light on their own by turning invisible molecular changes into visible beauty. Sup WHAT IS CHEMILUMINESCENCE? The emission of light as a direct product of a chemical reaction is known as chemiluminescence. It is not like a flame or incandescent bulb which glows because of heat ,however this process entirely skips the heating part. The working of this process can be simplified as follows: ●First Step:   The chemical reaction occurs which produces a high-energy intermediate that is an unstable molecule. ●Second Step: ...

The Chemistry of Smell

INTRODUCTION  One of the most powerful and intimate senses that human beings possess is Smell. While passing through the bakery,a whiff of freshly baked bß4read can take us back to our childhood, the rain droplets on the dry soil give rise to an aroma that can spark a feeling of nostalgia and the memories of loved ones are triggered by just a hint of perfume. Despite its importance, it often receives less attention than vision and hearing. Along with the visionary and hearing ability, smelling things also play an important role in experiencing the world around us. Such sensations holds a fascinating interplay of chemistry and biology: tiny volatile molecules, specialized receptors in our noses and intricate neural pathways in the brain. Sup In this blog post, we will explore the chemistry of smell by gaining an insight —what odors are made of,how our Olfactory system detects them, the science of fragrance design and why smells are considered important for health, memor...

ZOMBIE ANTS

INTRODUCTION  On hearing the word zombies, our mind immediately flashes the images of horror films and science fictions where reanimated bodies are shown wandering mindlessly under some wrong influence. But if we talk about the natural world, the process of zombification is not just fictional rather it is a real phenomenon. Most of the parasitic species have evolved the ability to manipulate the behavior of their host which forces them to act in ways which benefit the life cycle of a parasite. Sup In this blog post,we will expose the process of zombification, by quoting an example of a fungus named  Ophiocordyceps   unilateralis   which is often nicknamed as the "zombie-ant fungus". It is found in most of the tropical forests and it has developed an extraordinary ability to hijack an ant's body thus turning it into a vehicle for fungal reproduction. This phenomenon basically unfolds the parts of biology, horror story and an evolution.  THE LIFE CYCLE...
