Exploring The Fossils

INTRODUCTION 

The preserved remains or traces of ancient animals and plants which have lived in the past are known as Fossils. They help us in providing insight into the history of life on Earth, which tells us about the evolution of species, the environment they lived in and the conditions which shaped our planet.
In this blog post,we will explore a topic which holds the history of animals and plants that are FOSSILS along with their formation,types,importance and their hunting or collection.

WHAT ARE FOSSILS?

As stated above, the remains of ancient plants and animals which have got preserved in the Earth over a period of time are known as Fossils. They can take many different forms,however three of the important forms are as follows:
●Body Fossils: The preserved remains of an organism's body such as bones,shells or leaves are known as Body Fossils.
●Track Fossils : The impressions or tracks which are left behind by the movement or activity of an organism are known as Track Fossils.
●Mold Fossils: The cavities or impressions which are left behind by the shape or structure of an organism are known as Mold Fossils.

FORMATION OF FOSSILS 
The process of formation of fossils is known as Fossilization and it is a very complex process as it requires specific conditions which are as follows:
●Death and Burial: When an organism dies,it is quickly buried by the sediments which protects it from scavengers and being decayed.
●Decay and Compression: The soft tissues of an organism decay which leaves behind only the hard structures like bones or shells.
●Mineralization : The water in the ground is rich in minerals which flows through the sediments and deposits minerals into the remains of an organism. 
●Fossilization : As the time passes,the minerals replace the original organic material thus creating a fossil.

TYPES OF FOSSILS 

Depending on the composition and the process of formation, Fossils can be classified into different types which are as follows:
●Permineralized Fossils: Such type of Fossils are formed when the minerals seep into the cells of an organism which preserves the structure to a greater extent thus this fossil can provide more detail about the organism.
●Replacement Fossils: Such type of Fossils are formed when the original organic material is replaced with the minerals. 
●Impression Fossils: Such type of Fossils are formed when the sediment molds the shape of an organism. 

IMPORTANCE OF FOSSILS
It is essential to understand the Fossils if we want to gain a deeper knowledge about the history of life on Earth. The important informations that Fossils can provide us with are as follows:
●Evidence of Evolution : A record of the changes in life forms over time is offered by Fossils. 
●Insights into Ancient Environments : They can even reveal information about the environments and ecosystems of the past.

FOSSIL HUNTING AND COLLECTION
Hunting and collection of Fossils are the exciting activities which involves searching and collecting Fossils from the Earth's surface. Collectors of Fossils are known as palaentologists which use various techniques to find and extract Fossils that provide valuable insights into the history of life on Earth.

Hunting of Fossils involves a wide range of techniques, some of them are as follows:
●Searching Exposed Rock Formations: Cliffs,hills and badlands are the exposed rock formations where Fossils can be easily found.
●Digging and Excavation: Carefull digging and doing excavations are widely used for finding the Fossils .
●Screening and Seiving: By screening and seiving the rock and sediment,fossils can be found.
>Tools and Equipments 
Palaentologists and Fossil collectors use a wide variety of tools and equipments, some of them are as follows:
●Rock Hammers and Chisels: To break up the rock and extract Fossils, these tools are used.
●Brushes and Picks: To clean and excavated the Fossils, these tools are used.
●Gloves and Safety Gear: The collectors of Fossils are required to wear protective gloves and gears for their own safety.
>Importance of Responsible Fossil Collection 
It is essential to collect the Fossils responsibly as they are preserved for future generations. This includes the following ways:
●Following local Regulations : Local regulations regarding fossil collection must be followed by the collectors of Fossils. 
●Respecting Private Property: Permission should be obtained from private property owners before collecting Fossils from there by the fossil collectors. 
●Preserving Fossil Context: Fossils should be collected and preserved in a manner which maintains their context and scientific value.
