The two most important blood groups systems are as follows:
●The ABO Blood Group system 
It is the most well-known and widely used classification system which categorizes blood groups into four main groups: A,B,AB and O.
•Group A: It has the A antigen on the red blood cells.
•Group B: It has the B antigen on the red blood cells.
•Group AB: It has both A and B antigens on red blood cells.
•Group O: It has neither A nor B antigens on red blood cells.
●The Rh Blood Group System
This system is an another important classification system which categorizes blood as Rh-positive(presence of the Rh anitgen) or Rh-negative(absence of the Rh anitgen).

Determining the Blood Group

The determination of blood group is a crucial step to carry out various medical procedures such as blood transfusions,organ transplantation and during pregnancy safely. It can be determined by a simple blood test which checks for the presence or absence of specific antigens on the surface of red blood cells.
•Blood Test
For the determination of blood group the blood test done is known as ABO and Rh typing. 
>Taking a blood sample: A sample of blood is taken from the individual. 
>Testing For Antigens: The blood sample from the individual is tested for the presence or absence of specific antigens. (A,B and Rh).
•Interpretation of Results
The blood group of an individual is determined by the results of test carried out on the blood sample from the individual. The possible results are as follows:
>ABO Blood Group:A,B,AB or O.
>Rh Blood type: Rh-positive or Rh-negative

•Hemolytic Transfusion Reaction: This happens when the immune system if the recipient attacks the red blood cells of the donor which leads to their destruction.

•Acute Hemolytic TransfusionReaction(AHTR):  It is a life-threatening reaction in which kidneys can fail,disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and shock. It occurs due to ABO incompatibility and requires immediate medical attention. 
•Kidney Failure: The breakdown of red blood cells leads to the release of free hemoglobin in the bloodstream which can damage the kidneys and leads to acute kidney injuries.
•Shock:  The severe reactions can escalate the shock,organ failure and even death due to clogging of blood vessels and significant loss of red blood cells.
•Organ Failure: Organs like kidney or liver can fail if the blood transfusions were not compatible, this situation becomes life-threatening and requires urgent medical attention.
•Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn(HDN):  In pregnant women,the Rh incompatibility can lead to HDN,it is a condition in which the mother's immune system produces antibodies against the baby's red blood cells which causes anemia,jaundice and other complications in the baby.
