MAJOR PANDEMICS IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND
Since ancient civilizations, pandemics have significantly affected human beings by causing widespread illness which lead to death and disruption of society. Some of the most important pandemics which couldn't be unnoticed are as follows:
●Prehistoric Epidemic
This epidemic has been believed to occur around Circa 3000 BC when a 5000 year old Chinese hut was found filled with skeletons which confirmed an ancient epidemic that likely killed a huge population.
●The Plague of Athens
This pandemic occurred during 430 BC when Peloponnesian War was taking place and it killed approximately 100,000 people including the Athenian Statesman Pericles.
●The Antonine Plague
This pandemic occurred during 165-180 AD and it is considered similar to smallpox or measles which killed 5 million people as per estimation in the Roman Empire.
●The Plague of Justinian
This pandemic occurred during 541-542 AD in which the bubonic Plague wiped out the Byzantine Empire killing up to 25 million people which contributed to the decline of an empire.
●The Black Death
This pandemic occurred during 1346 to 1353 and it is considered to be one of the most deadliest pandemic in the entire human history as it killed 75-200 million people which was nearly 30-60% of Europe's population.
●Smallpox Pandemic
This pandemic occurred during 1870 to 1874 and spreaded globally which killed an approximately 300-500 million in its 12,000 years of existence.
●Spanish Flu
This pandemic occurred during 1918 to 1920 and it was the deadliest pandemic of the 20th century as it infected over one third of the population which lead to death of 50-100 million people.
●Asian Flu
This pandemic occurred during 1957 to 1958 which originated in China and killed over 1 million people across the world.
●Hong Kong Flu
This pandemic occurred in the year 1968 which was caused by H3N2 virus that killed an estimated 1 billion people globally.

●HIV/AIDS Pandemic
This pandemic started in the year 1981 and it is still present, it has claimed over 35 million lives all over the world and many people are still living with this condition.
●SARS(Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome)
This pandemic occurred in the year 2003 which infected 8096 people across the world and resulted in 774 deaths.
●Swine Flu Pandemic
This pandemic occurred in year 2009-2010 and infected approximately 1.4 billion people which lead to 151,700 to 575,400 deaths.
●West African Ebola Epidemic
This pandemic occurred in the year 2014-2016 and there were 28,000 cases and 11,325 deaths were reported.
●COVID-19 Pandemic
This pandemic started in the year 2019 and is still active. It infected hundreds of millions and caused over 6.4 millions deaths across the world as estimated in middle of the year 2022.

CAUSES OF PANDEMICS
Several Factors are responsible for causing pandemics, some of the factors are as follows:
●Viral Mutations : If the genetic material of the virus changes then a new strains are formed which can be more contagious or deadly.
●Animal-human Transmission : There's a possibility that diseases are transmitted from animals to humans and then from person to person.
●Global Travel: Nowadays, the mobility of people have increased around the world which leads to the easier spread of diseases across the borders.
●Lack of Preparedness: Lack of vaccines, inadequate infrastructure for public health and poor response to outbreaks increases the spread of diseases.

IMPACT OF PANDEMICS
The pandemics greatly affect the societies, individuals and most important the economy of the country. Some of the impacts of pandemics are as follows:
●Loss of life: The pandemics results in significant mortality mainly among the vulnerable populations which are more susceptible towards catching diseases such as elderly and those with underlying health issues.
●Economic Disruption : They can result in declining of global support chains which leads to widespread closures of business and result in significant economic losses.
●Social Distancing Measures :  They can lead to social distancing measures such as lockdowns, mask mandates and travel restrictions which eventually impact daily life and mental health.

PREVENTION STRATEGIES
It is very important to prevent and response towards pandemics and this requires a coordinated effort from government,Healthcare professionals and individuals. Some of the key strategies are as follows:
●Vaccination: It is important to develop and distribute effective vaccine for preventing the spread of diseases.
●Surveillance : The outbreak of disease should be monitored and tracking the spread of disease is also crucial for early detection and response.
Sup
●Public health infrastructure : It is necessary to invest in infrastructure for public health which includes Healthcare systems, testing capacity, contact tracing as they are essential for responding towards pandemics.
●Global Cooperation : International cooperation and coordination are equally important for sharing information, developing common response strategies and distributing resources.

CONCLUSION

In summary, pandemics have been a frequent occurrence in human history, resulting in extensive sickness, mortality, and societal disruption. From the Black Death to the COVID-19 crisis, these worldwide health threats have significantly affected humanity. Grasping the reasons, effects, and preventive measures for pandemics is crucial for readiness and response to these dangers.
Various factors can lead to pandemics, such as viral mutations, transmission from animals to humans, and worldwide travel.
Pandemics can profoundly affect societies, economies, and individuals, leading to mortality, economic turmoil, and social isolation measures.
Strategies for prevention and response, including vaccination, monitoring, and health infrastructure, are essential for diminishing the risks and effects of pandemics.

The Magic of Chemiluminescence

INTRODUCTION  While thinking about light, the human mind jumps to a conclusion that sources like Sun,glowing bulbs or even a campfire, basically which involves the presence of heat to glow that is burning fuels, heated filaments or nuclear fusion. But what if we say that nature and chemistry have their own unique way of making light without heat? For that, let's look into the fascinating world of chemiluminescence, where chemical reactions create radiant light on their own by turning invisible molecular changes into visible beauty. Sup WHAT IS CHEMILUMINESCENCE? The emission of light as a direct product of a chemical reaction is known as chemiluminescence. It is not like a flame or incandescent bulb which glows because of heat ,however this process entirely skips the heating part. The working of this process can be simplified as follows: ●First Step:   The chemical reaction occurs which produces a high-energy intermediate that is an unstable molecule. ●Second Step: ...

The Chemistry of Smell

INTRODUCTION  One of the most powerful and intimate senses that human beings possess is Smell. While passing through the bakery,a whiff of freshly baked bß4read can take us back to our childhood, the rain droplets on the dry soil give rise to an aroma that can spark a feeling of nostalgia and the memories of loved ones are triggered by just a hint of perfume. Despite its importance, it often receives less attention than vision and hearing. Along with the visionary and hearing ability, smelling things also play an important role in experiencing the world around us. Such sensations holds a fascinating interplay of chemistry and biology: tiny volatile molecules, specialized receptors in our noses and intricate neural pathways in the brain. Sup In this blog post, we will explore the chemistry of smell by gaining an insight —what odors are made of,how our Olfactory system detects them, the science of fragrance design and why smells are considered important for health, memor...

ZOMBIE ANTS

INTRODUCTION  On hearing the word zombies, our mind immediately flashes the images of horror films and science fictions where reanimated bodies are shown wandering mindlessly under some wrong influence. But if we talk about the natural world, the process of zombification is not just fictional rather it is a real phenomenon. Most of the parasitic species have evolved the ability to manipulate the behavior of their host which forces them to act in ways which benefit the life cycle of a parasite. Sup In this blog post,we will expose the process of zombification, by quoting an example of a fungus named  Ophiocordyceps   unilateralis   which is often nicknamed as the "zombie-ant fungus". It is found in most of the tropical forests and it has developed an extraordinary ability to hijack an ant's body thus turning it into a vehicle for fungal reproduction. This phenomenon basically unfolds the parts of biology, horror story and an evolution.  THE LIFE CYCLE...
