INTRODUCTION
Chemistry is not just a subject rather it is a type of process which is happening every time around us. Chemistry plays an important role in our daily lives like the sour taste of lemon or the soap we use for washing. Three most of the important chemical compounds which we encounter everyday are acids, bases and salts. These compounds can be found in our food, medicines, cleaning products and even inside our bodies. It is essential to understand them for being aware about the working of World at basic level.
In this blog post, we'll explore acids, bases and salts along with their properties, examples, uses and importance in our daily lives.

WHAT ARE ACIDS?
An acid is a substance which produces Hydrogen (H+) ions when dissolved in water. Acids usually have a spur taste and can be corrosive in nature. The word 'acid' comes from the Latin word acidus which means sour.
Properties of Acids
●Sour in taste such as lemon or vinegar
●Turn blue litmus paper into red
●They react with metals to release hydrogen gas
●They can conduct electricity in aqueous solutions
●They can be strong or weak depending on their strength
Examples of Acids
●Hydrochloric Acid(HCl): It is found in our stomach which helps in digestion of food.
●Sulfuric Acid((H₂SO₄) : It is used in the batteries of car.
●Nitric Acid(HNO₃): It is used in fertilizers
●Citric Acid: It is found in citrus fruits like oranges and lemons.
●Acetic Acid: It is present in vinegar.

Uses of Acids
●Vinegar is used in food preservation.
●For removing rust or stains, they are used in cleaning agents.
●Fertilizers, dyes, plastics and other industries use acids.
●Stomach acid is useful for digestion.
Although acids are so useful, but they can be dangerous if strong in nature, hence must be handled very carefully.
WHAT ARE BASES?
A base is a substance which produces hydroxide ions (OH⁻) when dissolved in water. Bases are mostly bitter in taste and feel slippery to touch. Most of the cleaning product constitute bases because they can remove grease and oil.
Properties of Bases
●They taste bitter
●When touched, they feel slippery or soapy
●They turn red litmus paper to blue
●They can neutralize acids
●They conduct electricity when in aqueous solutions
Examples of Bases
●Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH): They are used in soap making.
●Potassium Hydroxide(KOH): They are used in liquid soaps.
●Calcium Hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂): They are used in whitewashing.
●Magnesium Hydroxide: They are used in antacids, milk of magnesia.
●Ammonium Hydroxide: They are found in glass cleaners.
Uses of Bases
●They are used in making soaps and detergents.
●They are used in cleaning products.
●They are used in medicines like antacids to treat conditions like acidity.
●They are used in agriculture to reduce the acidity of soil.
●They are used in paper industries, textile and plastic.
Like acids, strong bases can also be harmful and can cause burns if not handled properly.
WHAT ARE SALTS?
When an acid reacts with a base,a salt is formed and the reaction is known as neutralization reaction. During this process, acid and base cancel each other out, producing salt and water.
Example of Neutralization Reaction:
Hydrochloric acid + Sodium hydroxide → Sodium chloride + Water
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O
Here, sodium chloride (common salt) is formed.

Properties of Salts
●They are usually solid crystals.
●They can be acidic, basic or neutral.
●Most of the salts dissolve in water.
●They are often used in food, medicines and industries.
Examples of Salts
●Sodium Chloride(NaCl): It is a common table salt.
●Baking Soda(NaHCO₃): It is used in cooking.
●Washing soda(Na₂CO₃): It is used for cleaning clothes.
●Calcium Sulfate(CaSO₄): It is used for making cement.
●Ammonium Chloride(NH₄Cl): It is used in batteries and medicine.
Uses of Salts
●They are used in cooking and food preservation.
●They are used in medicines and injections.
●They are used in water treatment
●They are used in manufacturing glass, soap and paper.
●They’re used in fertilizers.

pH Scale:Measuring Acids and Bases
The pH scale is used for measuring the strength of acids and bases and it ranges from 0-14.
●pH less than 7 means acidic(pH<7).
●pH equals to 7 means neutral (pH=7).
●pH more than 7 means basic(pH>7).
For example:
●The pH of lemon juice is 2.
●The pH of vinegar is 3.
●The pH of water is 7.
●The pH of soap is between 9-10.
●The pH of bleach is between 12-13.
The pH scale helps scientists and industries control chemical reactions and ensure safety.
ACIDS,BASES AND SALTS IN DAILY LIFE
In our daily life,we can find these substances everywhere around us such as:
●In the Kitchen
•Lemon, curd and vinegar we use are acids.
•Baking Soda is a base.
•Table salt used in food is a salt.
●In the Bathroom
•Soap and Shampoo are bases.
•Toothpaste is a base which neutralizes acid in our mouth.
●In the Body
•Acid present in stomach helps in digestion of food.
•pH of the blood must remain balanced for good health.
•Antacids neutralize excess acid in the stomach.
●In Agriculture
•Lime is base which is added to acidic soil.
•Fertilizers contain salts.
●In Industries
•Acids and bases are used to make Fertilizers, dyes, medicines and plastics.

IMPORTANCE OF ACIDS,BASES AMD SALTS
The understanding of these substances is essential because of the following reasons:
●They help us in maintaining a good health (medicines and digestion).
●They are important for the production of food.
●They are used for cleaning and sanitation purposes.
●They are important for the protection for environment.
●They help in industrial manufacturing
Without acids, bases, and salts, modern life would not be possible.
